Audrey Goode

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Audrey Goode, beloved member of the Class of 1939 and one of our longest-serving staff members.

An alumna who was taught by Miss Nightingale and Miss Bamford in the original brownstone buildings, Ms. Goode graduated with the Class of 1939 and was voted "most dignified" by her peers. She worked extensively in the social service program, work that she continued during World War II when she volunteered at area hospitals.

Ms. Goode joined the staff at Nightingale in 1946 to cover an employee who was sick, and she never really left. While she began with simple administrative duties, she quickly became—along with her friend, the late Sarah "Betty" Hamilton—one of the most fundamental and consistent parts of our community. Throughout, she left the schoolhouse every day at 3:00 p.m. to continue her work in hospitals as a nurse's aide. (For a time, she even served as the school nurse when Nightingale did not have one.)

She cared as much for the girls after they graduated from Nightingale as when they were in the schoolhouse. After her retirement in 1986, she remained one of the most dedicated and connected of our alumnae. (Our alumnae room on the sixth floor is named in her honor.)

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Betty Hamilton and Audrey Goode Scholarship Fund here at Nightingale-Bamford. (Click here to make a memorial gift now.)

Her family is collecting memories of Ms. Goode, so if you have any short thoughts that you would like to share (or questions about the fund in her honor), please e-mail them to Sue Mathews, director of institutional advancement, at smathews@nightingale.org.
