Class V Visits the Cooper Hewitt

November 8, 2023

During the second visit on Class V’s “Journey Across Museum Mile,” students ventured around the block to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. There, students had a chance to see two exhibitions. In the exhibit “Give Me a Sign: The Language of Symbols” students learned about the importance of symbols and how symbols are designed, and even designed our own “journey” symbols. “In A Dark, A Light, A Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes,” fifth graders learned about one of the most transformative textile designers of the 1900’s and thought about the physical and metaphorical journeys she took in her career. However, the real highlight of the trip was playing with the interactive tables, where students could create their own furniture, hat, and building designs; and using the immersion room, where students created their own wallpapers.
