Months of preparation and hard work in all three divisions culminated in a community-wide day of philanthropy on Tuesday, December 2, otherwise known as #GivingTuesday. While #GivingTuesday efforts spanned the entire nation, Nightingale was particularly close to the cause as History Department Head Dr. Heidi Kasevich developed the curricular aspect of this national day of recognition, which was started three years ago by the 92Y (click here to read a recap from Crain's of #GivingTuesday, which mentions Nightingale's involvement). Our students chose the eradication of poverty as their school-wide cause, and girls in each division worked all fall to raise awareness and money for one of three charities that addresses a different aspect of that problem: Lower School girls focused on hunger and supported the Friday soup kitchen at All Souls Church; Middle School girls targeted illiteracy and supported the African Dream Academy in Liberia, and the Upper School took on homelessness with their support of the Women’s Refugee Commission. In addition to the terrific work that our students did to support these worthy organizations, our greater community also stepped up on #GivingTuesday to support Nightingale by donating more than $63,000 to our Annual Fund!

The #GivingTuesday programming at school culminated in an extraordinary assembly for girls in Classes II–XII, which was filled with inspiring stories and uplifting musical performances. Student speakers representing each division shared what they had learned and done over the past few months in preparation for #GivingTuesday, guest speaker Marissa Glauberman ’07 spoke to a rapt audience about her experience co-founding a school in the Jamestown community in Accra, Ghana, and the Gospel Girls and Upper School Chamber Chorus each performed beautifully. To cap off an already unforgettable assembly, celebrated gospel and R&B singer—and six-time Grammy Award–winner—BeBe Winans performed three phenomenal songs, which included one fun participatory number that had everyone singing along. It was clear by the end of the day that the spirit of #GivingTuesday would continue well beyond that single December day. Thank you to each and every person who had a hand in the success of this year's #GivingTuesday—it was a true reminder of the power each of us has to make a difference in the world.
