Curtains Lift for A Chorus Line
5, 6, 7, 8! This spring, students in Classes VII–XII welcomed audiences to the H. Dale Hemmerdinger Auditorium for four incredible performances of A Chorus Line. Conceived by Michael Bennett with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante, the musical opened on Broadway 50 years ago in July 1975. Set on a bare stage during a dance audition, the show offers a raw and deeply human look into the lives of performers chasing their dreams. A Chorus Line is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicals in Broadway history, winning nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1976 (one of the few musicals to ever do so).
Students auditioned in November and rehearsed through the winter and spring to bring this beautiful and poignant story to the stage. Ms. Davis and Ms. Tyner of the performing arts department directed and choreographed the production, respectively. Ms. Coudert, also a member of the department, served as technical director.
