Class IV's Winter Olympics
Class IV had an incredible time celebrating teamwork, determination, and the joy of competition during their Winter Olympics unit. These student-athletes truly took center stage, embracing each event with enthusiasm and pride.
Students participated in Olympic-themed activities such as the "Bobsled," "Curling," "Hockey Shootout," and a "Ski Jump." Using accordion mats placed on top of scooters to resemble a bobsled, teammates worked together to push forward—with some students pushing while others rode, racing down one end of the gym and back while being timed.
For the "curling," activity, using the center circle of the gym and poly spots, PE faculty created curling rings for students to aim toward. Class IV athletes then pushed scooters toward the target trying to land in higher-scoring rings, while also attempting to strategically knock other scooters out of scoring positions.
During the "hockey shootout," students took turns attempting to score goals from about 20 feet away. Each successful shot contributed to their team’s overall score, encouraging students to focus on accuracy and teamwork while cheering on their teammate
Finally, students had the chance to attempt their own version of a "ski jump" and each took turns running and jumped off a springboard onto accordion mats. After landing, students noted where their heels touched with a small spot. Teams earned points based on the distance of each jump, encouraging students to challenge themselves and improve their jumping distance.
The Winter Olympics inspire athletes to challenge themselves, support their teammates, and give their very best—and our Nighthawks did exactly that. Throughout this series, students demonstrated not only their growing athletic skills, but also the qualities that make strong teammates and leaders: effort, encouragement, and sportsmanship. Whether they were competing, cheering each other on, or lending a helping hand, every student played an important role in making our Olympic experience meaningful and memorable.
