Creativity, Coding, and Circuits in Class VI

In Class VI’s Creative Machines course, students dive into a dynamic introduction to computer science where code intersects with art, technology, and self-expression. Throughout the semester, sixth graders build a foundation in problem-solving—mastering essential concepts like functions, variables, conditionals, and loops while practicing debugging, decomposition, and logical reasoning across modules in game design, digital fabrication, physical computing, and machine learning.

During a recent hands-on physical computing unit, students explored inputs and outputs using Circuit Playground microcontrollers. For their debut project, titled "Light It Up!", Class VI put their hardware, code, and artistic design skills to the test to create responsive interactive sculptures.

The results showcased programming as a powerful medium for creativity, featuring projects like a flickering lighthouse at sea, an illuminated fire truck, a bubbling cauldron, a glowing jack-o’-lantern, and a dripping candle that glows while playing the Harry Potter theme song. By bringing their ideas to life through circuitry and code, Class VI is discovering firsthand how computer science connects to the world around them—setting a strong foundation for future Middle School Computer Science courses and beyond.
