From the Front Lines: An FDNY Hero Visits Upper School
On September 11, Upper School students welcomed Ed Hefele, a 28-year veteran of the FDNY, including 17 years as a Lieutenant. Born and raised in the Bronx, Ed earned a civil engineering degree from Manhattan College and briefly worked as an engineer before joining the New York City Fire Department in 1979. On September 11, 2001, he was called into work and responded to Ground Zero later that day. During their assembly, Ed shared his first-hand experience from 9/11, stories of the firefighters he served alongside and, drawing on his engineering background, insight into some of the technical aspects of one of our nation’s darkest days.
