Celebrating Black History Month

For the fifth consecutive year, the Lower School participated in their version of the African American Read-In (an NCTE initiative) as part of their February observance of Black History Month. This initiative highlights celebratory stories by and about Black people. Each Friday throughout the month, LS students gathered in the library during recess to listen to read-alouds from Ms. Benoit, Ms. Chery, Ms. Foster-Hinds, Mr. Freeman, Ms. Hines, Ms. Prindilus, Ms. Spiridellis, Ms. St. Jean, and Ms. Thomas. In Lower and Middle school assemblies, students learned about Black and African American poets and poetry, such as Nikki Giovanni, Mahogany L. Browne, Kwame Alexander, Amanda Gorman, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and Jacqueline Woodson. Students listened as their peers read poems and shared insights into the poets’ lives and contributions. Upper School students will be celebrating Black History Month at their assembly on March 6.
