Class IV’s Capstone Project
In Class IV Social Studies, students explore U.S. history and geography through the lens of social justice movements and the power of individuals to create positive change. The curriculum focuses on pivotal movements such as the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Rights and Suffrage, LGBTQIA+ Rights, and Workers’ Rights. These themes serve as entry points for understanding how the actions of individuals and communities have shaped the nation's history.
As a culminating experience, each student undertook a capstone project, conducting a biographical study of a change-maker who has made a meaningful contribution to one of these social justice movements. With guidance from a mentor teacher, students engaged in deep research and reflection, culminating in a creative presentation that showcases both their learning and their unique voice. Students chose from a wide range of presentation formats, including songs, technology-based projects, murals, dioramas, fashion designs, or newspaper/magazine-style reports.
