Class IV Meets Mahani Teave
As part of their yearlong study of Chile in Class IV Spanish, students learned about environmental activist, educator, pianist and children's book author Mahani Teave, who is from the island of Rapa Nui.Students had the opportunity to interview Mahani in Spanish during a video call, to learn more about her efforts to reduce the waste that washes up on the shores of Rapa Nui in the ocean currents, bringing with it garbage from around the world. Class IV students were inspired to hear Mahani explain how she designed an entirely sustainable school made with recycled materials collected from the debris left on Rapa Nui's beaches. Mahani then read her children's book The Girl Who Heard The Music, and engaged students in dialogue about how they can be agents of change in their own communities. Students took away a significant message from the inspiring morning: even the smallest choices within our communities can have a powerful, global impact.
