Upper School Earth Day
As part of their special programming to recognize Earth Day, several Upper School students had the opportunity to speak with environmental activist, educator, pianist and children's book author Mahani Teave, from the island of Rapa Nui. Students listened as Ms. Teave described the construction of an environmentally sustainable school built using recycled materials collected from the large amounts of waste that regularly wash up on the island’s shores. She explained the design and implementation process, the school’s sustainability mission, and the vision for the future of Toki Music School and its students.
A brief Q&A followed Ms. Teave's presentation, during which she engaged meaningfully with students about everything from the source of her inspiration to solve Rapa Nui's pollution problem to the many financial challenges facing the school. Upper School students then had the opportunity to participate in a variety of Earth Day workshops, some even led by their peers. The day concluded with a fashion show, where students modeled designs made from recycled materials.
